Cake Monday 10th February

We race (electronically) and the loser has to bake a cake to feed the office.
Why? because we like cake.
Who? everyone in the office. No one gets out of it.
When? 1st Monday of the month.
The rules: you make the cake yourself, without any help. You can't 'repeat' a cake. Your cake will be judged on presentation, difficulty and taste, and marked out of 10 by each colleague.

'Fruit Sponge' by Louise. Not only was this Louise's first cake to be judged, this was Louise's first cake she's made for a very very long time, since Primary School in fact. It's an apple sponge cake sandwiched with freshly whipped cream and fresh raspberries, topped with strawberries. Louise admitted that the strawberries weren't originally part of the plan, but were used to cover up the cracks/mess.

The Verdict: looks aside, this was a tasty cake. It was fresh, clean, light, and fruity. There was just the right amount of cream. The majority of the office really liked it (and hadn't seen it before it was sliced and served). Some saw the pieces of apple running through the sponge as a 'nice surprise'. Some 'hated the surprise'. Some didn't even notice the surprise. Criticisms were to do with the presentation and that it would have scored more highly if they ate it with their eyes closed. The fruit made it soggy for some. However, considering this was Louise's first cake, it was a triumph.

Next time: it was an intense drinks dash to see who would be next month's Baker. 3 colleagues would not be part of the race which only added to the already tense atmosphere. Not only does the loser have to bake a cake, there's a new rule whereby the loser has to make the next round of drinks for the entire office (which includes all the crockery and cutlery used to serve up Louise's cake). You can sense the fervent apprehension - we're talking way beyond the Heats in the Winter Olympics.

What didn't help was that the initial drinks dash had to be re-started due to error. There's one lane in the race which has a bad reputation. In the re-run, Adam was put in said lane and lost. Devastated isn't the word.

'Fruit Sponge' Average Score: 7.6

A top tier company that WILL invest in you. Click below to view the broad spectrum of opportunities available with this superb employer

This company has recently won an award for being an outstanding employer due to a very long list of attributes that make them stand out from the crowd.  As well as the usual corporate benefits package and performance related bonus schemes, employees benefit from free lunches and a very active social club that has created a “family feel” to the company. Structured career development plans allow staff to thrive within both technical disciplines and leadership roles. There is a very large budget dedicated to employee training and perhaps most importantly, there is an incredible amount of variety in technical work for engineers – this is something that every engineer craves and in turn, the company has a very low turnover of staff.

These opportunities are based in Cambridge and give you a flavour as to the type of roles available with this firm.
